What is the daughter project?
The Daughter Project is a holistic approach to girl child trafficking from high-risk Nepali communities to Indian Brothels. The project considers the need for awareness education, economic development, rescue intervention, and long term care of girls.
What is the history of this project?
The pilot Daughter Project was conducted in 2008 with outstanding results. In 2009, 31 girls were rescued from the hands of traffickers and dozens more were prevented from ever nearing the border,18 awareness campaigns were presented in high risk border areas with over 5000 Nepali children and adults educated about the risks of trafficking and sexual abuse. We now have 5 rescue shelters in these high risk districts with more on the way in 2010.
What organizations are involved?
The initial phase of the project is a collaborative effort between CARNET Nepal (Global Familyís administrative partner in Nepal) and VIVA Network with the financial assistance of UMN, Viva Network, Global Family and Local Nepali sources with a total budget of $64,041.53 (2009).
Who is really doing the work?
The distribution partners for the initial phase are 60 churches in nine border districts of Nepal that are high risk for trafficking. These churches provide volunteers that are trained as outreach field workers to conduct sexual abuse and trafficking awareness campaigns in high-risk communities, provide oversight to micro finance loans, and work with local authority to intervene and rescue girls from traffickers.
What happens to girls who cannot return to their families?
The second and ongoing phase of the project is the long term care of the rescued girls. Global Family has committed to take 100 girls annually who are not able to return to their families. These girls will be placed in our Family Care program to be cared for by volunteer caregivers provided by local churches and trained and monitored by Global Family. The budget for the care of the girls rescued in 2010 is $170,000.00, this includes long term care of girls who, unable to return home, will be placed in our family care program.
How much of my money really makes it to the child?
Donor designations are treated in the same way all donations to Global Family are. 100% of funds donated to the Daughter Project, are send directly. 100% of your donation goes to the shelter, food, clothes, medical and school fees for the child. No fundraising, USA administration or Nepali administration fees are subtracted.
